Gentse Strop

The Gentse Strop story dates back to the time of Charles V and the infamous “stroppendragers” or noose-carriers of Ghent. When the people of Ghent refused to pay additional imperial taxes, Charles V had the dignitaries parade through the city wearing a noose around their neck, as a sign that they deserved to be hanged. The noose thus became the symbol of their resistance against any form of tyranny and misplaced authority.
